What Dental Issues Does Invisalign Treat?

Invisalign Grand Blanc, MI

Invisalign® is a system of transparent plastic aligners that must be worn for at least 22 hours each day. The aligners are removable, but only when eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. They are changed every two weeks with a fresh pair that is somewhat tighter than the initial set. The aligners gradually shift the teeth into the ideal positions.

The application of Invisalign

Patients will need to see the dentist to know if this would be the most effective option for treating their orthodontic problems. The following is a list of orthodontic problems that Invisalign can help with:

Crooked teeth: Invisalign can help straighten crooked teeth and give the smile a straighter appearance.

Overbite: An overbite is when the upper front teeth protrude farther than the lower front teeth. The overlap can make chewing and biting inconvenient. Invisalign can help realign the bite to ensure the lower and upper teeth sit over each other correctly.

Underbite: An underbite is the polar opposite of an overbite. An underbite occurs when the lower teeth are positioned ahead of the upper teeth. An underbite can wear down the teeth and affect speech. The lower teeth can be pushed back with Invisalign, allowing them to rest naturally behind the front teeth. If the patient has a severe overbite, Invisalign and braces can be used to correct the problem.

Gaps between teeth: A gap between teeth is considered a spacing problem because there is too much space in the mouth. In this case, food can become stuck between the teeth and gums, causing pain and gum disease. Closing the gaps between the teeth improves not only one’s appearance but also one’s oral health.

Open bite: This condition is when the upper and lower teeth do not meet in the middle. The upper and lower teeth can be aligned with Invisalign.

Crowded teeth: When the jaw has insufficient space to accommodate all the teeth, erupting teeth will overlap with existing teeth or twist, resulting in overcrowding. Food can become lodged between the teeth because there is very little space between them. Tartar and plaque can also build up quickly, leading to tooth decay and periodontal disease. Invisalign can be effective for realigning the teeth.

Limitations of Invisalign

While Invisalign may correct various orthodontic problems, it does not have the same force and ability to shift teeth like braces. When it comes to complicated orthodontic treatment or significant tooth movement, a more conventional bracing technique may be required. Instances where the dentist may not recommend Invisalign include large gaps between teeth, intrusion and extrusion, severe tooth crookedness, and undersized teeth. Patients who have had previous dental treatment, such as a dental bridge, may not use Invisalign.

In conclusion

Although Invisalign can address the difficulties mentioned above, each situation is unique and will depend on the degree of the problem and whether or not there are several problems. Book an appointment with the dentist to learn more about your options.
