Four Tips For Reducing Your TMJ Symptoms

Tmj Dentist Grand Blanc, MI

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is a hinge-like part of the facial head region. The joint acts as a sliding hinge, connecting the jaw to the rest of the skull. When the temporomandibular joint experiences discomfort or dysfunction, the result is a TMJ disorder. TMJ disorders can be uncomfortable and inconvenient when trying to eat, smile, or speak. Thankfully, there are a few ways to remedy the symptoms. Keep reading to find out how!

How to reduce TMJ disorder symptoms

Outlined below are four tips for reducing symptoms of TMJ disorder. Review these tips when looking to eliminate discomfort and dysfunction.

1. Wear a mouthguard

One of the best ways to reduce the symptoms of TMJ disorders is to wear a mouthguard. Mouthguards can be custom-made by a dentist or they can be store-bought. Custom-made ones tend to be more effective because they are made of strong materials and they exactly match the oral cavity. However, store-bought ones are better than nothing and still provide successful results.

Mouth guards can effectively reduce TMJ disorder symptoms, one of which is bruxism. Bruxism typically occurs during the night; however, the results can roll over into the next morning, resulting in headaches, jaw locking, and soreness. A mouthguard helps to reduce bruxism. Additionally, mouth guards can be worn during the day for extra protection.

2. Request a muscle relaxing medication

Muscle relaxing medications are known to be very helpful when it comes to reducing symptoms of TMJ disorders. The jaw can become very tight, which can lead to locking and clicking. Both symptoms can be combatted with a muscle relaxant, which would have to be prescribed by a dentist or doctor. When taken in moderation, muscle relaxers can be quite useful.

3. Do jaw exercises

Physical therapists and dentists can work together to help TMJ sufferers practice jaw and oral cavity exercises. These exercises can help keep the oral cavity functioning properly while reducing discomfort and tightness. It may be advised to do the jaw exercises multiple times a day on a routine basis.

4. Take over the counter medications

Over the counter medications are known to have promising results when it comes to TMJ disorders. Discomfort and chronic soreness are two of the most common symptoms of TMJ disorders. With over the counter medications, these feelings can be remedied. Additionally, any inflammation around the joint and jaw can also be reduced with these medications.

Although over the counter medications are not meant to be a long-term remedy, they can be helpful for situations in which the discomfort is unbearable. Dentists recommend undergoing an evaluation to determine if a better medication, such as a prescription could be administered.

Remedying TMJ disorder symptoms

When suffering from a TMJ disorder, it is best to consult with a dentist. Dentists can perform evaluations to determine the most appropriate treatment route. Additionally, they can recommend specific at-home remedies to help reduce discomfort and dysfunction.
